Flood Gate Chain Restraint Maintenance for ABP

Flood Gate Chain Restraint Maintenance for ABP

Customer Overview

Associated British Ports (ABP), one of the UK’s leading port operators, is an existing customer of Hickman Engineering. With a long-standing relationship built on trust and expertise, ABP relies on us for critical maintenance tasks that ensure the smooth operation of its dock infrastructure.

Project Scope

We were engaged to perform maintenance on the west side flood gate chain restraint, an essential component of the main lock facility for the dock. This equipment is crucial for shutting the flood gates when there is a risk to the dock. Given its importance, maintaining the chain restraint in optimal condition is vital for the dock’s safety and operational efficiency.

The work involved refitting two heavily worn sheathes that operate the restraint. The pins for these sheathes also needed replacement due to extensive wear. Earlier in the project, the chain was replaced and connected to the existing structure. This specialist job required collaboration across multiple divisions, including welding, mechanical, and fabrication, to meet the unique demands of the task.

Project Execution

The team for this project included Michael Sanderson, Kai Morris, George Griggs, Kameron Cullen, and Ben McCall. Their combined expertise allowed us to handle the intricate nature of the work efficiently. We utilised a range of tools and techniques, including CAD design, a lathe, a burning torch, thermal lances, and site-specific personal protective equipment (PPE). Due to the confined nature of the work environment, our staff also underwent a three-day confined space training course.

The work was completed over a two-week period, adhering to the key deadlines set by the client. Meeting these deadlines required not only skill but also careful planning and coordination among our team. Despite the challenges, we successfully completed the maintenance, ensuring the chain restraint’s longevity and functionality.

Insights from the Team

We frequently work on similar dock infrastructure projects, but this task posed unique challenges due to its specialist requirements and the confined space environment. However, with the dedication of our team and the knowledge gained from previous projects, we were able to address all unforeseen issues effectively. The result is a fully restored flood gate chain restraint that will remain operational for many years if a proper maintenance schedule is followed.

Customer Feedback

ABP selected Hickman Engineering for this project due to our expertise and history of delivering high-quality work. The customer emphasised the importance of entrusting this critical equipment to specialists, given its role in dock safety.

They expressed satisfaction with the outcome, commending the professionalism and dedication of our team. ABP noted that the maintenance was completed on time and to a high standard, ensuring the flood gates are now in full working condition. They have confirmed their willingness to recommend Hickman Engineering for similar work in the future.

This project highlights Hickman Engineering’s ability to manage specialist infrastructure tasks effectively, delivering high-quality solutions within strict timeframes.
