Hickman Engineering are proud to have recently provided critical gearbox coupling work for Kettlewell, a new client of ours in 2023. We have built a relationship with this client and have undertaken a variety of works that were completed in a time critical manner due to their shipping requirements.
The immediate challenge we faced was the replacement of a flexible flange coupling within the vessel’s gearbox. However, it was soon apparent that more than just a gearbox coupling replacement was necessary; specialist alignment of the gearbox and main engine was required to prevent future coupling failures.
As a single screw vessel, the main engine and gearbox coupling are essential components for the vessel’s propulsion, making them indispensable to Kettlewell’s daily operations. The specialised maintenance we carried out underlines the critical nature of these components.
Completing the Gearbox Coupling Project
Our team of highly skilled professionals, including Jack Miller and Adam Osborne, was assigned to this intricate task, utilising an array of tools, including hand tools, bars, torque wrenches, calibration software for alignment, chain blocks, and wedges, to execute the complex maintenance work.
Completing the entire project within a mere 10 hours was a formidable challenge, necessitating both efficiency and expertise. Given the specialised nature of the works, only trained staff could perform the tasks swiftly and accurately. We pride ourselves on our ability to provide competent staff available around the clock, ready to address various challenges within the marine sector and always up to the task at hand.
